  • BHind the Scenes at BCycle - Kevin

by Kristina Haideman | Aug 04,2017

Meet Kevin, a recent graduate from the Wisconsin School of Business and summer BCycle business intern!

Tell us a little about yourself!BHind the Scenes - Kevin

I’m a Twin Cities native and recent graduate from UW-Madison with a BBA in Accounting. I’ll be headed back to school in the fall as part of the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program at the Wisconsin School of Business in preparation to sit for the CPA exam. When I’m not saving the world from misstatements in financial reporting, I enjoy attending concerts and sporting events, jamming on plastic instruments hooked up to my PlayStation, and playing darts/billiards at the local watering hole.

What do you like about working at Madison BCycle?
The team we have here provides a fun atmosphere, and in running a small-staffed operation, every day brings a new opportunity to do something different whether it’s event promotion, social media campaigning, or business development and analysis.

What is your favorite activity to do in Madison?
Nothing beats a Badger football game day. There is a certain charm in waking up to tailgate earlier than I can typically roll out of bed for class during the school week.

What is your favorite restaurant in Madison?
I’m a big fan of Asian Kitchen off State Street. The place is the gold standard for serving a college appetite on a college budget!

What is your favorite BCycle memory?
I assisted in installing the docks, kiosk, and solar panel for our new station on Library Mall, which was certainly a “fish out of water” experience for this accountant. Tax returns? Easy. Power tools? Not so much.

Meet Jack, a rising junior and SOAR program assistant at UW-Madison!

Tell us a little about yourself!WhyIBCycle - Jack
I'm going to be a junior at UW-Madison, and I am studying Computer Engineering and Computer Sciences. This summer I am working with the Center for the First Year Experience as an Orientation Assistant for the SOAR program.

    When do you use BCycle?
I mostly use BCycle on work days for the SOAR program. It's a good, quick way to get from the SOAR center at Union South to home or the student advising hub at College Library. BCycle comes in handy if we need to transport supplies or just travel from one place to another in a timely matter.

Why do you recommend bike sharing?
I recommend bike sharing because Madison is such a bike friendly city! There are plenty of BCycle stations located throughout Madison, and it makes travel throughout the city fun and efficient. Additionally, for out-of-state students BCycle allows access to bikes without having to worry about bringing a bike or moving it around when the school year ends.

Do you have a favorite BCycle memory?
My favorite BCycle memory was my first ever BCycle ride. I had always been curious how the system worked, and I was excited when I had an opportunity to give it a shot. The computer geek in me was also impressed with the BCycle app (Editor's note: We think our mobile app is pretty slick as well!). I got on the app, planned my route, and had a fun ride around the city.
  • #WhyIBCycle - Susan

Meet Susan, President of Downtown Madison, Inc. and BCycle advocate!

Tell us a little about yourself!Susan Schmitz
I am the President of Downtown Madison, Inc. (DMI). DMI is a downtown advocacy membership organization of 500 members.  I work every day in downtown Madison and I commute to work from the near west side on my bike every day—all year round.

    When do you use BCycle?
I use BCycle for meetings during the day (that I need to attend) in the greater downtown area. It is easier to hop on a BCycle than to use my own bike—I love the basket for my purse and folders!

Why do you recommend bike sharing?
As our city urbanizes and becomes more dense, BCycle is the easiest way to get around quickly/safely and with no parking challenges!

What is your favorite BCycle memory?
Riding from Sardine Restaurant to the Union Terrace on a beautiful summer evening with a flowy silk skirt and no shoes (I put my shoes in the basket).  It was awesome!

I work with an awesome team that is dedicated to making visiting and living in Madison a great experience. A perk is being able to BCycle around at any time!

What is your favorite activity to do in Madison?
I might be biased, but BCycling in Madison is the best!

What is your favorite BCycle memory?
Riding a BCycle for the first time was awesome. I rode around Tenney Park for an hour and had a blast.

Meet Seth, a front office manager with our friends at HotelRED!

Tell us a little about yourself!WhyIBCycle - Seth
I am originally from Sun Prairie, but I have lived in Madison for the last 6-7 years. I won my first bike in a coloring contest at the local Pamida department store when I was younger and have had a love for biking ever since. I love to travel, be outdoors, listen to music, and I'm a huge Red Sox fan.

    When do you use BCycle?
I use BCycle to commute to and from work, especially on Badger football gamedays when parking is so limited. The BCycle station next to Camp Randall is the one I use most frequently because I work right across the street!

Why do you recommend bike sharing?
I recommend bike sharing because in working at HotelRED I want to show off this wonderful city to those who visit, so we offer complimentary BCycle passes to our guests as a fun alternative way to explore Madison.

What is your favorite BCycle memory?
My favorite BCycle memories are those that the guests share with us about their biking adventures through Madison and how much fun they had.
