  • Meet the Interns | Christina Otten

by Christina Otten | Jun 24,2015

    Happy Wednesday!

Summer has finally arrived in style here in Madison, and alongwith it, a new group of summer interns at Madison BCycle. This year, there are three of us: Madeline Rojer, Brandon Caplin, and Christina Otten (that’s me!).

As interns, we are responsible for most of the social media (i.e. Facebook, TwitterInstagram, and this blog) that you all see on a daily basis. Because of our new presence in your lives, we t
hought it would be a great time to introduce ourselves so you can get a feel for who we are!

Without further ado, allow me to introduce myself.

Hi! My name is Christina Otten. I was born and raised in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, which you have probably passed on the interstate heading East to Milwaukee. I am studying English Literature and Religious Studies at UW-Madison. I will be a senior (scary, right!?) in the fall and plan to graduate in December of this year. You’re probably wondering what an English Lit major is doing as a marketing intern. As an intern at BCycle I have been given the opportunity to explore several of my career interests: social media, writing, and general communication, and have enjoyed every minute so far!

I started the internship on May 4
th (I remember that because someone at my orientation was wearing a “May the 4th Be With You” t-shirt), and since then have been able to meet so many of you awesome BCyclers along with other Madisonians. You may have seen me sometime during Bike Week, on a BCycle Brunch Tour, or just around town enjoying the benefits of BCycle. If we haven’t met, I would love to introduce myself in person, so stop by one of our future events and say “Hi!"

    Some Christina Otten fast facts:

    Name: Christina Otten

    Age
    : 21

    From: Oconomowoc, Wisconsin

Favorite BCycle station and why: It’s a tie between the one at Union South and by Memorial Union because I often go back and forth between the two!

My role as an intern: T
o regularly post on Instagram, attend events, to write these blogs, and actively promote Madison’s awesome bike share program!

Favorite ice cream flavor: Easy, Mint Chocolate Chip!

Favorite restaurant in Madison: Do coffee shops count for restaurants?
If so, Michelangelo’s Coffee House on State. (It’s a two-minute walk to the W. Mifflin @ Central Library station!)

Favorite thing to do during Summer: Sail! I grew up racing sailboats on a lake in Oconomowoc, and it’s still my absolute favorite thing to do.

    Brat, dog, or burger?
    Burger!

    Favorite quote:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain.

Thanks for letting me share a little about myself, and I really do hope to meet as many of you as possible. Happy riding! And as always, #ridethered

  • Madison BCycle 2015 Launches with New Price Option

by Martha Laugen | Mar 16,2015

(Madison, WI) - The Madison BCycle urban bike share system launches its 2015 season on Tuesday, March 17th. Along with the signature red bikes, Madison BCycle rolls out new pricing options to make the system more accessible.

Walk-up customers can now check out a bike at any station, paying $3 for every 30 minutes of ride time. A $3 fee accrues each half-hour increment from check out until a bike is returned to any station in the system. More frequent riders can still purchase a monthly auto-renewing or annual membership which allows unlimited, free trips under 30 minutes, and usage fees of $3 each half-hour increment after, until the bike is returned to any station.

"We want to keep things simple and encourage even more riders to go by BCycle," notes Madison BCycle City Manager, Martha Laugen, "The $3 per 30 minute pricing is clear for customers unfamiliar with traditional bike share pricing. This way, kiosk users sign up at the station, choose a bike and are quickly on their way."

Madison BCycle has continued to show record ridership since its initial launch in 2011. In 2014 riders took over 104,000 total trips using the system, an average of 400 checkouts per day from March through December. The BCycle network of stations grew to 39 locations, spanning from Olbrich Gardens to the new UW Health Digestive Health Center on University Avenue.

The Madison BCycle season officially kicks off at noon on Tuesday, March 17th at the station at the corner of Hamilton and Main Streets. To mark the St. Patrick's Day launch, BCycle will introduce a uniquely green "Lucky BCycle" into the iconic red fleet.

According to Laugen, "Bicycling is truly a green transportation option and we are pleased to see more residents and visitors experience the benefits and fun of bike sharing."
